About Us |
|
Amherst Chinese School, a non-profit organization, was established in1976. Mrs. Su, the real force behind the creation of this school, was teaching culinary classes at the time in the continuing education program of the Town of Amherst. Due to her efforts, the Amherst Chinese School was also formed under the continuing education program of the town.
Amherst Chinese School initially started with sixteen kids, whose parents were originally from Taiwan, Republic of China. The intention was to let the children know and keep their own culture and ethnic heritage.
According to Mrs. Su, the number of the students started to increase after three years. At its peak, the school had more than sixty students. It served Asian families as well as the general public in Pioneer Valley area.
In more recent years, Amherst Chinese School has evolved from serving children with Chinese origins to serving anyone in the community of this geographical area with interests in Chinese culture and language, children and adults alike. This diversification has attracted families from Southern Asian countries, families with adopted children from China and families with no tie with China or Taiwan. The learning methods of the school have also expended to include simplified characters and pinyin phonetic transcription system.
Amherst Chinese School will continue to fulfill its traditional mission and will continue to evolve to meet new challenges and requirements at the same time in our effort to provide an affordable and meaningful learning experience to the public. |
